Tthe operating system behind the beloved Pebble smartwatch, has been open-sourced. Meanwhile, Pebble’s original founder, Eric Migicovsky, is working on a new smartwatch that will run on this software. Migicovsky describes the upcoming device as having “basically the same specs and features as Pebble, with some new fun stuff.” While details on pricing and availability are still under wraps, users can sign up for updates at repebble.com. For context, Pebble launched in 2013 as one of the first mainstream smartwatches, attracting a dedicated fan base with its e-paper-style display, long battery life, and hackable software. It was eventually acquired by Fitbit, which was later bought by Google—leading to Pebble’s official discontinuation. Despite this, the Pebble community stayed alive through Rebble, a group that kept Pebble services running after its shutdown. With Google now open-sourcing PebbleOS, It seems the future looks brighter for both legacy Pebble users and the upcoming “not-Pebble” smartwatch Migicovsky is developing. However, Google hasn’t released all of PebbleOS, as some proprietary Bluetooth stack and chipset support components remain locked.
