In his first State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Rodrigo Duterte has said that it has ordered the newly-created Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to develop a National Broadband Plan to improve the state of the internet in the Philippines. In his speech, President Duterte ordered DICT to develop a National Broadband Plan to accelerate the deployment of fiber optic cables and wireless technologies to improve internet speed in the Philippines. Back in July 2015, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) rolled out its "Free Wi-Fi Internet Access in Public Places" project. In a recent post by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), there will now be free 24/7 internet access for all traversing the Pasig River via ferry. Users can connect to internet hubs across 12 Pasig River Ferry Service (PFRS) stations from Escolta to Pinagbuhatan. On top of that, there will also be free internet on the ferries themselves - ensuring users are never disconnected along the route. Internet speeds will reach up to 60 Mbps, with support for 100 users simultaneously surfing the web. This is a joint effort of the DICT, MMDA, and Pasig LGU under the Free Public Internet Access Program (FPIAP).
