The Blue H1 UMPC is probably the only ultraportable laptop specifically marketed to the Philippines but never got much airtime (except for that Engadget mention earlier). I thought it deserves a second look. Got a unit and we’re unboxing it for the first time.
The Blue H1 is a 7″ inch (800×480 screen) laptop with 1.0GHz Via C7-M processor, 1GB RAM, 40 GB HDD, WiFi, LAN, 0.3 megapixel webcam, 2 USB 2.0 ports and 4-in-1 card reader. We’re putting it side by side with and Asus Eee PC 701 and an HP B1200.

Main advantage is the 40gb HD. A bit slow but still a bang for the buck since it’s only P9,995 for linux and 11K for the windows version. Perfect for non-techy (or even techy) people who just wish a simpler way to surf the web, chat, VOIP, do some simple office work without the bulk of a conventional laptop.

I kind of wish Blue will release a refresh of their ULPC with the following changes.
– Increase screen size to occupy the entire lid (8.9″ perhaps)
– Increase physical screen resolution to at least 1024*600
– Increase touch pad size to maximize the general space it’s located in
– replace the VX800u chipset with it’s non ULV counterpart, VX800, for better performance (higher supported FSB, higher clock speed for IGP, 10/100/1000 LAN support)
– replace the underpowered VIA C7-M 1.0 Ghz processor with the socket compatible VIA Nano 1.0 Ghz processor which is expected to perform better than it’s Intel Atom counterpart (to increase performance by a factor of 2 – 4 times, depending on the process, without increasing pwer draw)
– and then provide a VIA Nano 1.2 / 1.3+ Ghz processor alternative
– provide a 2 Gb RAM alternative
– provide a SSD storage alternative
