While Von is doing his series on Pinoy Top Blogs, I’d like to share some of the data that I’ve mined in there as well. One of the more interesting things I discovered is that Blogger (BlogSpot) is the most popular blog service used by Filipinos, accounting for more than 50% of the sample population.
What’s more interesting is that local blog service provider i.PH came in second at 6.75% although way below Google’s Blogger service.
This is followed by BlogDrive and Wordpess.com at 6.00% and 5.40% respectively. The rest are shown on the table above.
The survey is taken from the current database of members from Pinoy Top Blogs. Of the total registered accounts of just over 1,500 blogs, 533 of them were using free or hosted blog services. Several of the ones included in the list are not really blog services but free hosting services (e.g. fil.ph and dHost.info) with which you can install any blog scripts you want while Pod-o-matic is a free hosting for podcasts.
Blogger’s popularity (6.29%) may be attributed to the fact that it’s one of the oldest running services out there. Although LiveJournal is also a old as Blogger, it hasn’t gain as many users. I guess usage of LJ is waning in favor of the newer ones like WordPress.com and Friendster.
YugaTech.com is the largest and longest-running technology site in the Philippines. Originally established in October 2002, the site was transformed into a full-fledged technology platform in 2005.

I don’t think LJ is losing popularity though. I’ve got Filipino friends that prefer LJ over Blogger. I guess it’s because of the “social features” – something blogspot lacks.
Miguel says:
Yes, LJ has lots of users, my personal blog included.
I think the reason LJ users don’t join PTB is because LJ doesn’t allow you to put inline images and code in your template.
vonjobi says:
hmmm… so about a thousand of those registered are actually paying for hosting? kaya pala yumayaman ka =)
bikoy says:
I also dont think LiveJournal popularity is waning. Putting the PTB code in livejournal can be tricky for most users kasi. I honestly think once the popular LJ users join PTB, a lot of the present top 100 PTB blogs will be knocked off the rankings :D
Also, mahirap mag-track ng hits sa LJ since most LJ users read other LJs through their friends list and actually don’t visit/contribute hits to the actual LJs of their friends
Eugene says:
Yeah, I’m quite sure there are a lot more LJ users than the PTB suggests. Majority of the pinoy blogs I read are from LJ. I even created an LJ account for the sole purpose of having my identity on my comments on my friends’ LJ entries.
jun says:
Is there a way to see the top 100 Pinoy LJ blogs?
Noemi Dado says:
I also have an LJ account which I barely update even my daughter. It’s needed sometimes when LJ friends use only “friends only” entry.
Eugene says:
I use WordPress and it’s great!
( I wonder who the other Eugene is…who left the previous comment )
jhay says:
With the costs of having your own webhosting I’m not really surprised to find out that Blogger came out on top.
I was lucky enough to be awarded a free .com.ph + hosting. And I just hope my luck doesn’t run out. :D

I prefer tabulas, or probably my own wordpress blog because it’s very customizable, unlike LJ. Although I must admit i haven’t tried blogs other than LJ, blogger, tabulas, and wordpress.
I commend Friendster for switching to wordpress.
Skittles says:
yes we do. yes we do. because blogspot is easy, especially for newbies like me. i also tried wordpress – its much harder yet more sophisticated in style. just to state the difference between the two.
