DICT fully shutting down 3G networks in the Philippines by September 30

Listen to article

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is fully shutting down 3G networks in the Philippines by September 30, 2025. The final date follows DITO and Globe’s completion of their phaseout, with Smart Communications expected to finish before the deadline.

As per the DICT, the move will help improve security by reducing hacking and scams for mobile users. This is due to legacy technologies (2G, 3G) being more vulnerable to devices able to intercept data from mobile phones.

The removal of these networks is timely since there’s an increase in online transactions during the holiday season. Globe and Smart are working with the DICT and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to shut their legacy networks down.

In addition, the DICT was joined by the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) to meet with telcos to discuss online threats. This includes developing measures against misinformation, illegal sales, and child exploitation.

Hope the savings in terms of maintenance cost will be re-invested by the telcos to improve LTE and 5G connectivity.

some remote areas still don’t have 4G & LTE coverage and only relies on 2G and 3G networks to make calls & sms.

As a Android user I was shock din when I accidentally see it news at Google platforms, lately Kaya pala ayaw na gumana ng 3G sakin, siguro dapat kasabay ng pag phased out po nito ay palakasin ang internet ng LTE kasi sakin mahina talaga, alam kung same din sa ibang tnt and smart user.
