HONOR is about to shake up the foldable phone market with its Magic V5, folding down to just 8.8 mm thick, about the thickness of a CD case. That slim profile makes you wonder: could this be the best book-style foldable phone you can buy?
The Magic V5 debuts in China on July 2, but we already know it will edge out the current record holder, OPPO’s Find N5 (8.93 mm when folded). HONOR’s earlier Magic V2 was thin enough to slip past a pen, but the V5 takes it even further. A slim foldable means less pocket bulge and more comfort when you carry it around.
Of course, thinness isn’t everything. Samsung is readying its Galaxy Z Fold 7, promising a gentler curve and lighter build. Vivo is also in the race: its X Fold 5 will be lighter than the 219 g X Fold 3. HONOR hasn’t shared the Magic V5’s weight yet, so we don’t know if it can match or beat these rivals on the scale. Handling, screen crease, battery life, and camera bumps will also matter when we judge the “best” foldable.

Beyond size, HONOR’s Magic V5 is expected to pack top features: a sharp OLED main screen, a smooth 120 Hz refresh rate, a fast processor, and versatile cameras. If HONOR can hit a strong price point, alongside its thin frame, it could give Samsung, OPPO, and Vivo a run for their money. The trick will be balancing build quality and durability with that paper-thin fold.
No global release date has been set yet, but past HONOR foldables have reached other markets a month or two after China. By late summer or early fall, you might be able to judge for yourself whether the Magic V5 is the new champion of foldables, or just the thinnest hype in town.
