Apple in Talks with Tencent, ByteDance for AI Integration in China

Listen to article

Apple is reportedly in early discussions with Tencent and ByteDance to integrate their AI models into iPhones sold in China.

This move comes as Apple faces regulatory hurdles and declining market share in the world’s largest smartphone market.

Apple recently began rolling out OpenAI’s ChatGPT globally through its Apple Intelligence feature, enabling Siri to handle tasks like summarizing text and managing presentations.

However, ChatGPT is not available in China, and strict regulations require generative AI services to gain government approval before release.

To address this, Apple is exploring local AI models such as Tencent’s Hunyuan and ByteDance’s Doubao.

Sources reveal the discussions are in preliminary stages, with ByteDance declining to comment and Apple and Tencent yet to respond.

A potential partnership could help Apple regain footing against rivals like Huawei, which has surged in the market with AI-powered devices like the Mate 70 series.

Apple has also reportedly held talks with Baidu about integrating its Ernie AI model, but technical disputes, including concerns over data use, have stalled progress. Baidu did not comment on the matter.

Apple’s iPhone sales in China fell 0.3% year-on-year in Q3 2024, while Huawei saw a 42% surge. The absence of localized AI capabilities in Apple’s latest iPhones has been cited as a setback, with Huawei gaining traction among consumers seeking advanced features.

If successful, a partnership with Tencent or ByteDance could bolster Apple’s competitiveness in China while positioning the local tech giants as leaders in the country’s growing AI landscape.
