Bluetooth 4.2 brings increased speed and IP connectivity

Listen to article

Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has officially announced Bluetooth 4.2 which brings improved security, increased speed, and IP connectivity to the wireless technology standard.

Bluetooth 4.2 key features:

Privacy and Security – introduces industry-leading privacy settings that lowers power consumption and builds upon the government-grade security features of the Bluetooth specification. The new privacy features makes it difficult for eavesdroppers to track a device through its Bluetooth connection without user permission.

Speed and Capacity– transfer speeds is now 2.5 times faster while packet capacity is 10 times more versus previous versions. This reduces transmission errors for lower battery consumption and more efficient connection.

Internet Connectivity – Bluetooth 4.2 brings Internet Protocol Support Profile (IPSP) to allow Bluetooth Smart sensors to access the Internet directly via IPv6/6LoWPAN.

Certain features like enhanced privacy and security can be implemented to some older Bluetooth 4.x adapters via firmware update. However, increased transfer speeds and capacity will require newer hardware.
