DILG Secretary Eduardo Año proposes online caroling for Christmas to prevent further spread of the Covid-19.
Año, who is also the Vice-Chairman of the National Task Force Against Covid-19, has expressed to propose to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) to ban physical caroling this year. Instead, he suggests conducting online caroling.
“Kung magkakaroon ng caroling, siguro online na lang, online caroling pero yung personal at saka face-to-face ay sa ngayon hindi pa muna nararapat dahil hindi pa natin nafa-flatten ang curve,” Año stated in an interview.
Año also mentioned that physical caroling is still not prohibited since the IATF has not yet released a resolution; however, it has been recommended by NCR mayors. Metro Manila mayors have also agreed to ban Christmas parties this year to prevent mass gatherings.
To prevent further spread of the virus, Joint Task Force Covid Shield commander Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar also supported the proposal to ban face-to-face caroling this Christmas season. Eleazar stated that although caroling had been part of the Filipino tradition, the country is still currently fighting against the pandemic. Everyone is encouraged to stay at home and enjoy the Christmas season with family.
Moreover, if the proposal is approved, parents are encouraged to explain to their children the need to skip the traditional caroling for this year.
