Web discovery service Stumbleupon is officially shutting down today and its users will be moved to a new service.
In a statement released last May by one of its co-founders, the shutdown was inevitable as it focuses on Mix, another web discovery platform, in order to provide content that are tailored for each user. “After careful consideration, we’ve made the decision to focus fully on building Mix and transition StumbleUpon accounts into Mix.com over the next couple months,” he said. “And we’ve learned from SU that while simplicity and serendipity is important, so is enabling contextual curation (ie. “cool space photos”) instead of just clicking “I like it”. The shutdown will take place today, July 1, as its users will be urged to migrate to the new Mix.com website.
Stumbleupon was first found in November 2001 as a discovery engine where users can filter in or out the content they want to discover from the service’s hundreds of indexed partners. The service claims to have served over 40 million visitors every year and have reached a 25 billion stumble milestone back in 2011.
