WhatsApp is introducing a new privacy feature called Strict Account Settings, which is designed for users who face a higher risk of targeted cyberattacks. The app provides end-to-end encryption as its default security measure but WhatsApp states that some users including journalists and public figures require enhanced security to defend against uncommon yet advanced threats.
The Strict Account Settings function operates as a lockdown mode.

The system establishes maximum security and privacy controls which users cannot modify after they activate the function. The system blocks people from receiving unknown sender attachments and media while it prevents unsolicited calls from connecting with users who are not in their contact list.
The feature protects against specific attack methods which cybercriminals use to conduct targeted cyberattacks. WhatsApp states that most users can maintain their security through existing protection measures.
Users can access Strict Account Settings through Settings > Privacy > Advanced > Strict Account Settings as the feature becomes available.
