Unlike current smartphones with curved bezels surrounding the display, Apple is focusing on a separate screen apart from the front. How Apple intends to integrate the side-mounted display may vary from notifications, music playback, and even app launching. In the patent’s illustration, Apple hints at the use of app icons for Messages, Calendar, and Camera demonstrating versatility. However, patent filings are often just step one for exploring a concept prior to product development. While we’re surely in anticipation for this technology, keep in mind that patents are also filed to prevent competitors from using similar ideas.
