Apple has introduced two new chips, M5 Pro and M5 Max, designed to power the latest MacBook Pro models and handle heavy professional workloads such as video editing, 3D rendering, and AI processing. The chips were announced as part of Apple’s latest update to its Apple silicon lineup. Apple said this design can improve performance by up to 30 percent for professional workloads compared with the previous generation. Apple said the design increases GPU compute power for AI tasks by more than four times compared with the previous generation. Apple also added new technologies across both chips, including a 16-core Neural Engine, an updated Media Engine for video processing, and built-in Thunderbolt 5 controllers for faster data transfer. According to Apple, the new chips are designed to help MacBook Pro users run demanding applications while keeping power efficiency high as part of the company’s plan to reduce energy use and reach carbon neutrality by 2030. Apple today officially unveiled the M5 chip which will power the refreshed 14-inch Macbook Pro, Apple Vision Pro and the iPad Pro. Built using 3rd generation 3nm technology, the Apple M5 comes with a new 10-core GPU architecture with a Neural Accelerator in each core which now has over 4x the peak GPU compute performance compared to M4.
