As the demand for high-speed broadband internet increases in the country, PLDT reinvigorates its fixed line services by powering it with fiber optic technologies. During a technical briefing on Wednesday, PLDT-Smart Technology Group Head Rolando Peña said that fiber optic technology allows the fixed line network to transmit voice, data, and video over the internet at much higher bandwidths, faster speeds, and better quality. PLDT’s total fiber optic network has already reached 54,000 kilometers, the most extensive in the country and four times more than what the competition is building. PLDT and Google’s Taara project have brought fiber-like internet to Barangay Subay in Talim Island, Rizal without laying a single underwater cable. The Taara system uses free-space optical communication to transmit data via light beams, offering a lower-cost and faster-to-deploy alternative to submarine cables in hard-to-reach areas.
