Google Authenticator now supports cloud-syncing of two-factor authentication (2FA) codes right through your Google Account. That means, if you lose your phone with Google Authenticator installed, you will still have access to these codes online. Previously, Google Authenticator stored codes primarily on the device only, which can be problematic since the user has also lost the ability to login on services that rely on Google Authenticator via 2FA. “With this update we’re rolling out a solution to this problem, making one-time codes more durable by storing them safely in users’ Google Account,” the search giant said in a blog post. “This change means users are better protected from lockout and that services can rely on users retaining access, increasing both convenience and security.” As of writing, the update has already gone live to the App Store, but it hasn’t appeared yet on the Google Play Store.
