The Indonesian government has blocked access to specific online services such as Steam, Epic Games, and more. The previously said companies including big ones such as PayPal and Yahoo are now banned in Indonesia as the companies failed to comply with a new requirement related to Indonesia’s content moderation laws. The country gave the companies until July 27 to comply and has banned those who didn’t. The requirement which is part of a bigger law in Indonesia allows the government to obtain data about specific users, as well as coerce companies into removing content that disturbs public order or is considered illegal. Indonesia will begin restricting access to social media platforms for users under the age of 16 starting March 28, according to an announcement from the country’s communication and digital affairs ministry. Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid said the new regulation will require “high-risk” digital platforms to remove accounts belonging to Indonesian users below the age limit. Platforms operating in the country will be required to comply with new regulations set by the Indonesian government, though detailed compliance rules have not yet been disclosed. Indonesia’s move follows similar initiatives in other countries seeking to limit social media use among minors.
