The update adds Google’s new Material 3 Expressive design and a more customizable Quick Settings panel, giving users a cleaner look and more control over their devices. The new Material 3 Expressive design brings smoother animations, background blur effects, updated menus, and cleaner fonts. Aside from the alarm change, Google Clock 8.5 also updates a slider design to match Material 3 Expressive. The new slider is thicker and easier to see, replacing the older Material 2 style. A new beta—likely the first Android 16 QPR1 (Quarterly Platform Release 1)—is expected to arrive before the end of May, offering early access to Google’s bold “Material 3 Expressive” redesign. Dubbed “Material 3 Expressive,” the update brings a cleaner, more dynamic feel to the OS. Leaks and reports throughout 2025 have hinted at this vibrant UI refresh, which is part of Google’s continued evolution of its Material You design language. But for many users, the most noticeable change will be the UI transformation introduced by Material 3 Expressive.
