As such, Microsoft has announced it will lay off 5,000 workers in the next 18 months including the 1,800 it sent out the door earlier today. The reason -- Microsoft says it's partly due to netbooks. With every press launch I attend that introduces newer netbooks, one of the very first questions I usually ask is the shelf life of Windows XP and how it could hurt Microsoft's bottomline.
