The system aims to let commuters pay using cards, e-wallets, and other digital methods across major rail lines like MRT 3, LRT 1, LRT 2, and the upcoming Metro Manila Subway. The chosen company will handle the building, operation, and maintenance of the system as part of efforts to improve and modernize public transport payments in the country. The feature joins existing cashless payment options on LRT-2 which include mobile NFC payments and GCash Commute QR. With Mastercard contactless payments now available on LRT-2, we're making everyday travel more seamless and secure, helping commuters save time and move through their journeys with greater confidence," said Jason Crasto, Mastercard’s Country Manager for the Philippines. Visa has introduced its new Scan to Pay QR payment system across the Asia Pacific region, aiming to make everyday cashless transactions faster and more convenient for users. Visa says the system is designed for a mobile-first market, where more people are now using smartphones for shopping, bills, and daily payments. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas will extend the operating hours of the Philippine Payment and Settlement System (PhilPaSS) Plus to 24 hours a day, seven days a week beginning 2026.
