Several companies, including GCash, Visa, and Mastercard, have shown interest in the Philippine government’s plan to create a single fare payment system for trains and other transport. The project is called the Philippine Automated Fare Collection System (PAFCS) and is expected to be bid out by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) before the end of the year.
The system aims to let commuters pay using cards, e-wallets, and other digital methods across major rail lines like MRT 3, LRT 1, LRT 2, and the upcoming Metro Manila Subway.
The DOTr said it wants a system that is connected and easy to use across different transport services. Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the goal is to make payments simple and unified for commuters.
Aside from GCash, Visa, and Mastercard, other companies like Siemens Mobility, Hitachi Asia, LG CNS, and Cubic Transportation Systems also joined a market study held in Singapore.
The project is now under review, with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The government plans to approve it by May, release bid documents by June, and award the contract by the fourth quarter.
The chosen company will handle the building, operation, and maintenance of the system as part of efforts to improve and modernize public transport payments in the country.
