A marketing officer revealed in an email that MSI's upcoming X-Slim X340 Notebook will definitely arrive in the Philippines next quarter and based on previous reports, could be as early as April. This 13" ultra-slim notebook from MSI only weighs 1.3kg (2.8lbs) and as thin as 6mm (19.8mm at its thickest), certainly a very close call to the Macbook air's 4mm to 19.4mm figures. Earlier this month, we discovered the MSI Wind PC as the desktop version of the popular netbooks. The Atom-based mini desktop PC is MSI's answer to the expensive Asus Eee Box. The MSI Wind PC isn't really that small but for the retail price of Php14,995 I still find it a bit on the expensive side. I've got the chance to get fairly acquainted with the MSI Wind U100, one of the early competitors in the 10" range of the UMPC market. MSI did the right thing by skipping the 7-inch segment and went all-out with a 10-incher (there's an MSI Wind U90 at 8.9" but was never launched in the Philippines and the version I got was the MSI U100XP 10" running Windows XP). MSI was among a number of manufacturers that chose the Intel Atom CPU on the first round so they enjoyed the hype the came with it.
