Commuters can now access the 50% fare discount on MRT-3 using GCash, as part of the government’s push to ease transportation costs amid rising prices. The discounted fare matrix, implemented by the Department of Transportation (DOTr), applies to single-journey tickets, stored-value cards, and cashless payments starting March 23. The move also supports broader efforts to promote cashless transactions in public transport systems. "Public transportation is part of everyday life for millions of Filipinos, and paying for a ride should be just as effortless. With Mastercard contactless payments now available on LRT-2, we're making everyday travel more seamless and secure, helping commuters save time and move through their journeys with greater confidence," said Jason Crasto, Mastercard’s Country Manager for the Philippines. Several ride-hailing and motorcycle taxi platforms in the Philippines have begun reducing their commission rates in response to rising fuel prices, following discussions in a congressional hearing. The move comes as fuel prices continue to rise, putting pressure on transport workers who rely on daily trips for income. VinFast Philippines is rolling out a new program that allows ride-hailing drivers to rent electric vehicles (EVs) for as low as ₱1,000 per day, aiming to make EV adoption more accessible for the transport sector.
