For what it’s worth, we think that the only rational explanation for having this kind of display is for 4K content consumption. Smartphones with 4K display will no longer have to resample the content to fit lower resolution display, which theoretically results to better viewing experience. But until such time that 4K contents become more mainstream and VR technology gained enough traction in the consumer market, Sharp’s newly-announced 4K LTPS IGZO display will, in our opinion, just be another impractical addition to the flagship smartphone of the near future. Sharp stated that the 5.5-inch IGZO display panel will enter mass production in 2016.
