The National Privacy Commission's (NPC) initial investigations revealed that the scam texts is run by a global crime syndicate and has summoned the data protection officers of Globe, Smart, DITO, Lazada, Shopee, and several banks to report on their spam prevention measures to combat the said scam. Liboro said that based on NPC’s initial investigations, the recent spam texts are run by a global crime syndicate, and not by a group that has gained unauthorized access to contact tracing forms, which was one of the first suspicions. Globe Telecom has really had enough of companies, particularly the Caritas Health Shield Inc., which send unsolicited text advertisements to their subscribers that they’ve asked the National Telecommunications Commission to aid them in putting an end to this issue. According to the Ayala-owned telco, they’ve received reports that their subscribers receive around five to 10 spam SMS on a daily basis which, unsurprisingly, caused a massive uproar from their patrons. For their part, Globe Telecoms has already deactivated a total of 384 cellphone numbers, as of April 2014, which they’ve identified as numbers used by text spammers. But because companies can easily switch to a new SIM card, the telco is having a hard time to lessen the number of SMS spams being sent to their subscribers.
