Jabra Speak2 75 Professional Bluetooth Speaker: Unboxing and Hands-On

Listen to article

When one hears of Jabra, an office setting is definitely one of the first things that comes to mind. This can be attributed to the widespread use of their speakers and peripherals in professional environments. After all, most, if not all the workplaces we’ve personally worked in have equipped Jabras at some point in time. Today we have the Jabra Speak2 75 professional-grade Bluetooth speakers to unbox and give our first impressions on.

We might need to provide a bit of context first, though. These speakers were engineered primarily as an on-the-go companion for high-quality videoconferencing. It’s built to relay crisp audio, whether that’s music or the voices of your colleagues, then transmit your voice back to them in crystal-clear quality. You should be able to hold boardroom-level meetings in hotel lobbies, by the beach, in a cave, or wherever your adventures take you.

The Unboxing Experience

The Jabra Speak2 75’s box is compact, a trend we’ve seen with almost all electronics in recent years. The labels are very self-explanatory: the product name, its purpose of being built for a hybrid working setup, Bluetooth technology, and Microsoft Teams certification.

On the rear is where Jabra struts its stuff a bit. It boasts four onboard microphones for unparalleled call quality, up to 32 hours of battery life, and a microphone quality indicator. Cool stuff.

Peeling each layer reminds us that “It’s what’s on the inside that counts.”

And it follows through by reminding you to download the Jabra Sound+ app and teaching you the basic controls of using this speaker. There’s definitely a lot to learn here.

Congratulations, we’ve gotten past all that! Now we’re rewarded to the product itself.

The Jabra Speak2 75 speaker comes in a felt case that exudes an upscale aura. The word “Jabra” is imprinted into the surface. Undoing the case requires us to unfasten an elastic belt. While we wish this was magnetic instead at this price point, it’s not too big of a deal.

Jabra Speak2 75 Design and Feel

The moment we pulled the speaker out of its case and into our hands, the first thing we noticed was its heft. The metallic construction of this signature “puck” shape undeniably contributes to its weight of exactly 466 grams. However, it manages to strike the fine balance between feeling premium and being cumbersome to bring around.

Knocking on any part of the speaker confirms that this isn’t a hollow shell either. It’s tightly-packed and there are no echoes or unwanted noises to be exposed in its build quality.

On the sides, we spotted minimalistic Jabra branding and wired connectivity options. This includes both a male USB Type-A adapter and USB Type-C female adapter, attached to the USB Type-C male plug.

The Speak2 75’s fascia, meanwhile, sports a sole power button alongside the speaker grille. Holding this power button reveals a lightbar, as well as several hidden buttons nestled within the speaker’s circumference. The call, Bluetooth, and minus/plus buttons are illuminated in a subtle green hue.

The design is elegant, refined, and simple. It’s sure to blend in anywhere you put it. Its base has been rubberized for the sake of grip – to ensure that this high-end speaker doesn’t just fall off wherever it’s placed.

Overall, it’s obvious that Jabra has used its extensive knowledge of the user base, as well as its experience, to design an item that caters to its target demographics’ tastes and lifestyles.

That’s enough of how it looks, and let’s get to the most important part.

Jabra Speak2 75 Sound and Call Quality

Let’s get the science out of the way – the Jabra Speak2 75 comes with a single 65mm driver. That’s it. Does “less is more” apply here?

We connected our smartphone to the Jabra via Bluetooth to start testing. After all, we’re fairly confident that any buyers will, at some point in their ownership experience, connect a Bluetooth device to this. It was easy as connecting any other Bluetooth speaker – press on the Bluetooth button, pair with your smartphone, and done.

Our first reaction: wow. The clarity is astounding, especially compared to Jabras of the past. Despite the single driver, the instruments don’t overpower the vocals. There exists separation and soundstaging, even on busier tracks. It’s a well-optimized piece of kit that does its best with the hardware it has.

We will admit, though, that it isn’t perfect. Bassheads might need to look elsewhere as the lack of a radiator means there’s no “bass thump” to be found. The speaker attempts to cover this up by playing the low frequencies without distortion (and it does!), but this does mean that vocals and highs take a hit. They become quite recessed.

Maximum volume isn’t all too high either. This is perfect for a smaller space, but won’t quite cut it for a mid-size social gathering or larger. One positive here is that even when you crank the volume up to the max, there’s no distortion.

So while it may not match up against its contemporaries with just its music playback performance, judging the Jabra Speak2 75 solely by its ability to play music would be akin to evaluating an amphibious vehicle by its just its ability to be a boat. You just can’t do that and call it fair.

Our quick testing arrangements for the speaker’s microphones were as follows: an everyday example using Bluetooth with our smartphone, holding a quick Google Meet and Messenger call with a friend, and then as a replacement within our WFH microphone setups to see if anyone we were speaking to would notice a difference in quality.

When it came to one-on-one calls in a quiet environment, the difference was not very noticeable. Callers on the other end didn’t notice the difference between our test phone (Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4) and the Jabra Speak2 75.

The comments started coming in when two scenarios occurred: the first being that more people needed to speak on my end (Jabra), so the microphone needed to be placed at the center. The others could be heard more clearly. Our best guess is that this is the work of those four onboard microphones.

The second situation was when it began to get noisy around us, and our caller commented that the background noises were much less apparent using the puck speaker.

Jabra Speak2 75 Other Features

The Jabra Speak2 75 has an advertised battery life of up to 32 hours. This is fairly impressive given the speaker’s size. It’s also relatively easy to see how much juice this has left: just click the battery icon, and the lightbar will indicate the remaining battery as a slice of the spherical pie.

Like all Bluetooth speaker battery life claims, though, we’ll put these claims to the test at a volume we’d consider “realistic.”

All the buttons are easy to press as well. They’re highly responsive and we didn’t experience any issues with them.

Jabra Speak2 75 Initial Impressions

The Jabra Speak2 75 is a specialized tool for a very specific type of buyer. It’s the speaker you buy when you know that, at any time, you can be called in for a high-level videoconference where clear audio is a must. This holds especially true if you have a group of people with you who all need to be heard.

It’s versatile enough to be used in the office every day, especially for teams that have half-onsite and half-WFH standup calls. On the other hand, it can also change hats to play some music while everyone’s working or to work remotely. While it may not be an audiophile’s first choice, we doubt anyone is going to complain about the audio quality.

On top of that, its elegant design and compact size allow it to stay on top of your table at all times. You won’t really feel the urge to stow it away when not in use. Think you’ll need it on-the-go? Bring the case along.

If it’s for you, and you can afford the price it commands, then why not?
