Nokia C5: Smartphone for the Masses?

Listen to article

Nokia’s new C-Series phone is out with its first model — the Nokia C5, powered by S60 platform which we normally see in high-end, full-featured smartphones from Nokia.

Nokia C5
2.2″ screen @ 240×320 pixels
up to 16GB via microSD (2GB included)
HSDPA 10.2 Mbps, HSUPA 2 Mbps
Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP
3.15MP autofocus camera, LED flash
Symbian OS v9.3 Series 60 rel. 3.2
Stereo FM radio with RDS
GPS with aGPS support and Ovi Maps 3.0

What’s conspicuously missing is WiFi connectivity. Li-Ion battery is also rated at just 860mAh.

Is the Nokia C5 an attempt to bring the smartphone to the masses? If the expected retail price of Php8,500 is any indication, it looks like it. Should be out before end of 2nd quarter.

Undeniably believe that which you said. Your favorite reason seemed to be on the internet the easiest thing to be aware of. I say to you, I definitely get irked while people consider worries that they plainly do not know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and defined out the whole thing without having side-effects , people could take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks

Actually the 8.5K is already a value for money for that phone, the thing is there is also a cheaper phone like Nokia 5230 which looks better than this C5 smartphone.

@anonymous – the smart in smartphone refers to the OS used in the device.

@Dan – you are wrong. i’ve been using smartphones since 2003 and i’ve never been in any plan since. right now, i am using my smartphone in just about anything i do with my laptop.

to everyone – no wifi? goodness, it has 3.5G and if that is not good enough for you then move on. ang mura lang ng 3G sa pinas, 5 pesos sa 15 minutes. tapos ang globe may plan na 50 pesos sa whole day. saan ka pa?!

I guess Yugatech readers are not the market. This is an upgrade to the 6120c (already on S60) and the other Series 40 phones. I for one still prefer candybars.

no wifi is no biggie, imo. i’d rather have hsdpa over wifi since its a lot cheaper and easier to access than wifi hotspots. but then again, most SM Malls now offer free wifi, hehehe.

this is a looker! one question though, with the acceptance of dual-active sims, why won’t nokia bring it to their phones? A good number of professionals who switched networks or numbers would atleast want the old number active while being able to attend to both everyday! Why not, Nokia?

No WiFi?! Now that sucks! Plus the small screen is just not enough for web browsing.

Though it would be useful for sending Tweets almost 24/7 thanks to the unlimited data plans now offered.

of course you can never have it all.. specially to on the price. :) I guess this is something to introduce people to smart phone and allow them to learn that a smart phone is not that totally different from a regular Nokia phone. Then eventually they will buy that fully featured smart phones.

No wifi is like a pebble on your shoe, it might be a small thing to some but its really bothers you but for 8.5 k it might be a a good deal… not for my wishlist…

with a 2.2″ screen i think browsing the web is out of the question… maybe that’s why wifi isn’t integrated since it’s mostly going to be used for mobile chat or GPS…

Wow, impressive. Only if it weren’t running Symbian. Those who have used S60 and other Symbian-based phones know that they tend to slow down really after a while.

Too bad there’s no Wifi, however, with most telcos offering unlimited browsing, it may not be that bad. You’d have to spend a few extra bucks every now and then if you want to surf or maybe signup for an unlimited data plan.
