What does the 'i' stand for in iPhone and other Apple products?

Listen to article

We all know what an iPhone or iPad is, but very few of us actually know what the “i” stands for even today. The iPhone, iPad, iMac, iTunes — the “i” prefix has marked most Apple products. But what does it exactly mean?

Back in the day when the very first iMac was introduced  at an Apple event in May 6, 1998, Steve Jobs stated that the “i” was for “INTERNET”. He also explained the link between “i” and “Mac.” Back then, it was very difficult to set computers up for an internet connection and the iMac was supposed to make it very easy to everybody.

iMac comes from the marriage of the excitement of the Internet with the simplicity of Macintosh. — Steve Jobs

Aside from the word Internet, Apple’s prefix also stood for individual, instruct, inform and inspire. Check out the slide presented by Steve Jobs that expanded upon what else the “i” means to Apple:

These days, I don’t think it really stands for anything any more. People have come to associate an “iAnything” with Apple. Have something to add to this article? Leave us a comment below on what do you think the “i” in Apple products mean.
