Top Nintendo Switch Games of February 2018

March is almost over but it’s never too late to look back at the titles that graced Nintendo’s hybrid last month. February was quite a slow month for the Switch as we only saw a few Major and Minor title releases. What we got were a ton of ports from classic titles of previous consoles. Even if that’s the case, we still received an exciting title, so let’s take a look at the Top Nintendo Switch Games of February 2018.

Major Release

Bayonetta 1 and 2

The gaming world’s iconic butt-kicking chic finally makes her way into the Nintendo Switch. Bayonetta 1 and 2 was one of the most awaited games of the month since its announcement last year.

Bayonetta was initially released way back in 2009 for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 with a Wii U entry alongside its sequel and a PC remaster a few years after. Bayonetta follows the story of, well, Bayonetta as she wonders around a fictional city in Europe, Vigrid, in search of the Right Eye of the World. The two eyes, aptly named Left and Right, are items used to keep the balance of the world in check.

The gameplay of Bayonetta is similar to well-known action RPG, Devil May Cry, where players hack and slash enemies in instanced fights. Bayonetta can perform various attack combos, both melee and ranged, to dispatch her enemies. Players can also make her jump, run, and evade during combat. After each round of encounters, the player is given a grade/rating based on how well they performed. Bayonetta starts out with only a few sets of equipments (four guns, to be exact) but through the course of the game, players will be able to unlock more like a shotgun, katana, and whip.

The game has five difficulty levels — Very easy, Easy, Normal, Hard, and Non-stop Climax. The two easiest difficulties feature a “Very Easy Automatic Mode” where Bayonetta automatically attacks enemies and players just need to press a single button to initiate combos.

Bayonetta 2 is the sequel of the first game and was released in September 2014 for the Nintendo Wii U. The sequel remained as a Nintendo exclusive, unlike the first which was released on multiple platforms. The title is a direct continuation of its predecessor as it picks-up where the first game left off. General gameplay is the same apart from a new feature called “Umbran Climax” which boosts Bayonetta’s attack and combo power once her magic gauge becomes full and a 2-player co-op mode.

If you wish to experience hacking and slashing demons and angels with style then head on over to DataBlitz and iTechPH/GameOnePH to get physical copies of the games. Bayonetta 2 is priced at Php 2,495 while a separate version with an included digital download for Bayonetta 1 is priced at Php 2,995. The Digital version of the games are priced at $29.99 (~Php 1,564) for Bayonetta 1 and $49.99 (~Php 2,607) for Bayonetta 2, buying the digital version of any of the two will get you a discount for the other for a total of $59.98 (~Php 3,128) for both.

Payday 2

The well-known heist game by Overkill Software finally busted its way into the Switch after being announced a few months back. Payday 2 was originally released for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 on August 13, 2013. In June 2015, an improved version was released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox one. It’s an online first person shooter (FPS) game with a main emphasis on 4–player multiplayer, although players can still opt to play solo with 3 AI companions should they wish.

The game has no set linear campaign but follows the story of a gang of four heisters. The missions contain small amounts of story content but are never really connected to each other in a major way. The main setting of the game is in Washington DC. Due to being an online multiplayer game, developers continuously release and introduce fresh content.

As for gameplay, it’s your common type of FPS just with a heisting theme. Players group up with four other characters and select a heist to undertake. These missions can range from robbing a bank to intercepting gold transports. The game features two distinct modes — Loud and Stealth. Loud, as the name suggests, is your usual all out aggressive approach to a mission where your team goes head to head with the police force. Stealth, on the other hand, will have you and your team sneakily complete your mission by avoiding detection and contact with any of the NPCs and police. There are heists that are loud only, stealth only, or an option to do either.

Players are given a wide selection of weapons from handguns to machine guns and even swords and katanas. Other than that, players also have the option of equipping different kinds of armor and improve their characters by assigning skills and equipping perks as they level up. These skills vary and can improve a character’s defense, damage, unlock special actions, and lower detection rate, among others.

To get your heist game on, head over to DataBlitz or iTechPH/GameOnePH to get a physical copy of Payday 2 for Php 2,495 or to Nintendo’s e-shop for a digital copy priced at $49.99 (~Php 2,607).

Minor Release

Dragon Quest Builders

Dragon Quest Builders is a sandbox role-playing (RPG) game version of popular RPG Dragon Quest. Think of it as minecraft but in Dragon Quest setting and graphics. The game was originally released in Japan in January 2016 for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita. A global release was done later that year in October. Last month, Nintendo’s hybrid received its port of the game.

There is actually an underlying story to the game but only to setup the premise of the title. The story is set in Alefgard in a parallel timeline with ending of the original Dragon Quest where the hero was tricked by the main antagonist that lead to his defeat and the spread of monsters to the land. Now, a new hero appears with a mission to restore the world.

Gameplay is what you’d expect in a sandbox style game, players build and roam around the map collecting necessary resources to complete structures. The game itself features a camp levelling system where the player’s base camp increase in level as it gets built upon. There is still an RPG aspect in the game where the player fight off with iconic monsters in the Dragon Quest franchise such as slime and dragon.

If your up for a Dragon Quest themed sandbox adventure then head over to DataBlitz or iTechPH/GameOnePH for a physical copy of the game for Php 2,395 or at Nintendo’s e-shop for a digital copy priced at $49.99 (~Php 2,607).

And that’s a wrap. Once again, join as at the end of the month for our list for March 2018.
