Huawei donates cloud-based computer to DepEd

Listen to article

Huawei, a well-known Chinese networking and telecommunications equipment company, has recently donated a cloud-based computer system to the Department of Education (DepEd).

This is made possible through the DepEd’s Adopt-a-School program (ASP) which gives private entities the opportunity to become active partners in providing assistance, either on a short–term or long–term basis to various concerns in public education.

Huawei’s Cloud-based Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) system consists of 50 terminal units composed only of monitor, keyboard, mouse, and adaptor. According to Huawei, the system can save energy and improve efficiency since the terminals do not need a CPU. The company also believes that it is an ideal platform to deliver learning modules to public schools.

The cloud-based computer system costs Php8 million and will be installed at the DepEd central office first for testing.

1. 50 terminal cost 8Million pesos. (overpriced)
2. Donation of Huawei’s Cloud-based Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (why not servers or physical computers?)
ex. IBM Blue Gene donation of IBM to DOST

This is so wrong. Definitely not a smart move by DepEd.

HUAWEI IS BANNED by Western powers and in Australia FOR ESPIONAGE allegations. Given that Pinas and China are not in good terms.

Dear Phl Govt, please return the donation now!!! Do not trust Huawei, ZTE, and all Chinese companies. The USA has basis why they do not trust these companies. And Pinoy’s uninstall WeChat on your mobile. It will be used by China to hack our networks.

I don’t want to sound paranoid, but it smells fishy. Why donate now amidst territorial tension between the two nations? I know Huawei is an independent firm, but I think they were involved in spying activities in the past. I read it somewhere

Correct! Thanks but no thanks to China. Huawei pa! Yari tayo diyan! Huwag sana padala ang mga nasa gobyerno natin

This is bad! First, mabagal internet sa pinas for cloud based computing! Second, Huawei has a bad reputation of including spyware on their equipments used by telecom companies.

Why is it so expensive for a cloud-based computer. Even if you budgeted a computer for 30T multiply it by 50. Still it cost only 1.5 million. What is the rationale of this concept if we want to replicate it.
The reason for this inquiry is we want to replicate in all public school using cloud-based concept. I thought it was more cheaper.

Either Huawei over-valued their equipment’s worth (for financial, publicity, etc reasons) or there are other hardware / software licensing that added to its cost.

Regardless, it’s still a huge donation made to DepEd.

Very interesting, and it’s cloud based? Connecting them to a capable network will be a big pain in the ass though. Having 50 normal PC’s on a single line stresses the bandwidth already, so imagine 50 cloud based PC’s booting from said network.
