MSI CX620: Heavy-weight Core i3 Laptop

And it literally means heavy — the MSI CX620 is in more ways like the big brother of the CX420 that was featured here earlier.

The MSI CX620 is the one that’s really a desktop replacement unit with a 15.6″ (diagonal) display screen with a full-sized keyboard coupled with a dedicated numeric keypad.

Like the CX420, the CX620 is powered by an Intel Core i3 330M processor running at 2.13GHz (2 Cores, 4 Threads). Memory is maxed out at 4GB DDR3 RAM and the hybrid video switches between Intel GMA HD and an ATI Radeon HD 5470 with 1GB VRAM.

The chiclet-style keys are large enough and well-spaced apart and because it has a lot of real estate, MSI added a dedicated numeric keypad on the right side so you get a second large Enter key on the far right end.

Storage is provided by a 500GB SATA hard drive with an internal DVD+RW drive. I’m a bit curious why it only has 2 USB ports but MSI added an HDMI port and eSATA port at the back as well a 4-in-1 card reader and ExpressCard.

As for connectivity, its got WiFi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1. The webcam is 1.3 megapixel and the 15.6″ display has a maximum resolution of 1366×768 pixels.

This unit is very heavy and weighs in at least 5.5lbs (close to 2.5kg) with the 6-cell battery. The MSI CX620 has a suggested retail price of Php39,990 in stores.

better invest in a decent clone gaming desktop w/ 22″ LCD around 24K plus a netbook worth 16k (e-machines)

Anything below 17 inches do not deserve a full-sized keyboard. Bagay lang ‘yon sa desktop replacement laptops na 17 inches and above. Otherwise you’d have keys cramped in 15 inches of space.

The GPU is disappointing. This is really just for those who want the CX420 with a larger display because basically it has the same specs…

WATAABIGLAPTOP. Just kinda disappointed with the ATI graphics card. It is not something you want to play much of your games on. Kinda surprising to know it only has two USB ports. For a desktop replacement device, you would want to have a multitude of ports since you would be surely using several at a time. With its huge size, I wonder why they couldn’t add more.

On another note, why are chiclet-type keyboards getting popular today? I personally don’t like them, especially when touch typing. That huge space between each keys really bothers me, and it’s kinda annoying. I hope not all laptops / netbooks will use this design.
