USB 3.2 will double transfer rates, use existing Type-C cables

Listen to article

The USB 3.0 Promoter Group, comprised of Apple, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Microsoft, Texas Instruments, and others, has announced the latest USB Type-C specification, USB 3.2.

The USB 3.1 specification was released back in 2013 and boasted transfer rates of 10 Gbit/s using the then new USB Type-C specification. Now, the newest specification, USB 3.2, will boast increased performance through multi-lane operation, effectively doubling transfer speeds 20 Gbit/s. Rest assured, it will remain compatible with USB 3.0 and earlier devices.

The new specification is now in its final review stages and is set for release in September 2017. We will have to wait a little longer to experience it though, as manufacturers still have to implement it in their future devices.
