The ASUS ROG Phone is looking to be one of the hottest smartphones of this year. Designed to satisfy the most demanding mobile gamers, it comes with technology and features not normally found even in flagship smartphones. Check out its ten best features below.
Table of Contents
The ROG Phone definite screams gaming with its diamond-cut highlights and copper detailing. It also has a Gorilla Glass front and back, metal framing, and water-resistance. To top it off, it is the world’s first phone with ASUS Aura RGB lighting, featuring an illuminated rear ROG logo that can display a whole rainbow of lighting schemes: static, breathing, strobing or color cycling. You can even trigger lighting effects with phone events such as incoming calls, notifications and more.
The ROG Phone sports a 6-inch 18:9 AMOLED display with 2160 x 1080 resolution. The numbers are not really groundbreaking as there are other smartphones that have the same specs. However, the ROG Phone stands out by having a 90Hz refresh rate and 1ms pixel response time for blur-free visuals. It also has a 108.6% DCI-P3 color gamut, HDR visuals with a 10,000:1 contrast ratio, and capable of churning out 550nits of brightness.
If you’re making a phone dedicated to gaming, then expect it to have the best hardware possible. In the case of the ROG Phone, it has Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 flagship chipset that is speed-binned up to 2.96GHz, Adreno 630 GPU, up to 8GB RAM, and up to a whopping 512GB UFS 2.1 storage. In addition, it has Cat.16 LTE for up to 1Gbps downloads, and 802.11ad gigabit-class Wi-Fi.
Heat management is a big deal for a gaming phone with high-end specs as mentioned above. Good thing ASUS equipped the ROG Phone with their GameCool System consisting of a carbon cooling pad, copper heat spreader, and a 3D vapor-chamber. The company didn’t stop there, though, and included an external AeroActive Cooler in the package for added cooling performance and to avoid thermal throttling.
One of the challenges of mobile gaming is playing while charging. ASUS took that into consideration and included side-mounted ports with USB-Type C so you can charge the phone while letting you fully grip the sides while playing in landscape mode. Connect the AeroActive Cooler and you still get this feature including a 3.5mm audio jack. It’s a minor design change but gives mobile gamers a huge advantage.
Controlling your game is no longer limited to your screen thanks to the ultrasonic AirTrigger touch sensors. These are left/right triggers at the top of the display for landscape-mode gaming, and are programmable to activate any available on-screen action: aiming, firing, inventory selection, steering, navigating —or anything that normally requires a screen tap. In addition, the ROG Phone also has an advanced haptic actuator built in for powerful force feedback.
Audio is an important part of gaming and to complement its gaming prowess, the ROG Phone is equipped with dual front-facing stereo speakers with dual smart NXP 9874 amplifiers, 24-bit/192KHz audio engine for Hi-Res audio files, DTS Headphone:X for 7.1-channel surround sound over headphones, and Qualcomm aptX for high-definition audio over Bluetooth.
Providing juice to the ROG Phone is a 4,000mAh battery which is a good capacity for a smartphone that will be used heavily. It claims up to 7 hours of WiFi gameplay, 11.5 hours of WiFi video play, and up to 40 hours of WiFi music live stream. When it comes to charging, it supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0, but you can take advantage of the ASUS HyperCharge that is capable of recharging the battery from 0% to 60% in just 35 minutes.
The ROG Phone is not just limited to gaming as it can take photos as well. It is equipped with the same camera configuration as the ZenFone 5Z with Sony IMX 363 12MP dual-pixel image sensor with 4-axis OIS, 8MP secondary, and an 8MP front camera. Just to give you an idea, the ZenFone 5 got a score of 90 at DxOMark. Not bad for a gaming phone.
This is what separates the ROG Phone from other gaming smartphones in the market. It comes with a number of accessories that expands its gaming capabilities. There’s the AeroActive Cooler mentioned earlier, the Mobile Desktop Dock, TwinView Dock, ASUS WiGig Dock, Gamevice, and the Professional Dock. You can watch our short video below to see them in action.
And that sums up the best features of the ROG Phone. Are these enough to make you upgrade from your current phone? Let us know in the comments below.
