ASUS finally puts OLED on the ROG Ally X20.. but there’s a catch

Listen to article

After 3 years since the original ASUS ROG Ally, the brand has finally made the jump from LCD to OLED display technology. The ROG Ally X20 is ASUS’ latest handheld device. It’s meant to celebrate the brand’s 20th anniversary, hence the black-and-gold color motif.

To start things off, the ROG Ally X20 comes with a 7.4-inch Nebula HDR OLED display. This is a 0.4-inch increase over previous Ally models, giving gamers a bit more real estate when playing on-the-go. This new panel can get plenty bright at 1,400 nits and has a buttery-smooth 120Hz refresh rate.

This means that this latest iteration of the Ally finally gets an upgrade in brightness and vibrancy of colors. This allows it to be more competitive with other rivals that have also moved on to OLED, such as the Steam Deck quite some time ago.

Also, the ROG Ally X and X20 both have the latest AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chipset as their beating heart. This promises not only 15-40% better performance over previous iterations but also better power and thermal efficiency. This is mated to 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM and a 1TB SSD.

The joysticks and buttons have also been upgraded to last longer and be easier to use in-game. ASUS states: “In normal operation, the D-pad has 4 movement axis, typical for most controller games. But when rotated 90 degrees, the D-pad opens up to 8-axis movement, perfect for fighting games where precision sweeps across the circumference are crucial for hitting those combos. We’ve also added a metal dome above the rubber dome base to give the D-pad incredible crisp and clickly feedback. At the same time, we’ve refined the face buttons, sitting them more flush with the chassis and reducing the actuation force. This provides a quieter sound, smoother thumb sliding between buttons, and less fatigue during long play sessions. The ROG XBOX Ally X20 even has a new rubberized coating on the rear of the handgrips for enhanced control and comfort during long play sessions.”

The catch? The ROG Ally X20 can only be purchased as a bundle right now. It’s paired with the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 glasses for the “immersive cinematic experience” as ASUS puts it. It’s apparently a 171-inch, 240Hz treat for the eyes.

It cannot be bought separately at the moment.

Does the jump to OLED justify purchasing the bundle? Let us know your thoughts!
