TikTok tests AI tool to detect deepfakes using creators’ likeness

TikTok is testing a new AI-powered tool that helps creators detect unauthorized AI-generated content that uses their face or likeness.

The feature, first spotted by social media consultant Matt Navarra, is currently being tested with a small group of creators in the United States. TikTok confirmed the limited rollout, saying the tool is designed to help creators identify and report AI-generated videos or images that impersonate them.

The new feature follows YouTube’s rollout of its own AI likeness detection tool, which is already available to eligible creators and has been expanded to celebrities and talent agencies.

To use TikTok’s feature, creators must first complete an identity verification process through Jumio. This requires submitting a government-issued ID and taking a real-time selfie. TikTok says it does not retain users’ ID documents, while facial data is used solely to match a creator’s likeness against AI-generated content.

Once verified, the system scans AI-generated content on the platform for potential matches. If content appears to use a creator’s likeness without authorization, the creator can review the results and report the posts or accounts for impersonation.

Unlike some AI features introduced by other platforms, TikTok’s likeness detection is entirely optional. Creators must actively opt in before the platform begins monitoring AI-generated content that resembles them.

The rollout comes as concerns continue to grow over AI-generated deepfakes and unauthorized use of people’s identities online. Earlier this month, Meta introduced an AI image generation feature that allowed public Instagram photos to be used for creating AI images by default, but the company withdrew the feature days later following public criticism.

TikTok has not announced when the AI likeness detection tool will become available to more creators or expand outside the United States.
