Apple iPhone 12 mini teardown now out

iFIXIT has recently released the teardown for Apple’s most affordable smartphone from the iPhone 12 series, the iPhone 12 mini.

Based on the teardown, the iPhone 12 mini’s display is held down by some tough adhesive, just like its bigger iPhone siblings. Its smaller frame has smaller hardware, including its battery, loudspeaker, and Taptic Engine. It gets a rework for the upper sensor assembly that contains the speaker, Face ID, and sensors to fit on a smaller body. It uses the same dual rear cameras as the regular iPhone 12 with  ƒ/1.6 wide-angle and Æ’/2.4 ultra wide-angle sensors. Its wide-angle module also features optical image stabilization.

The situation is different from its cable and socket as it comes bigger than other parts to maximize the extra space. The iPhone 12 mini’s battery is rated at 8.57 Wh, which is more than the iPhone SE 2020’s 6.96 Wh. It only comes with a 12W wireless charging, which is 3W less compared to its bigger siblings. Although battery connectors are the same as the iPhone 12 Pro Max, it will not fit on the iPhone 12 mini.

The US version has additional squares between the Face ID camera modules where the ambient light sensor is located for older iPhones. The US variant also has a mmWave antenna flex cable soldered to the board’s underside.

The teardown shows that display and battery were well prioritized on the iPhone 12 mini. Most major components were also made modular enough to fit well on a small form factor. It also safeguards parts against water damage.
