Facebook announces global expansion of Messenger ads

Facebook, through its Messenger blog page, has made known to its users that it will roll out the global expansion of Messenger ads. Although still in beta, it hopes to connect more people to businesses through targeted advertisements.

The advertisements will appear only on the home tab of the Messenger app. It will be a gradual roll-out, with a certain number of users to see ads towards the end of the month and eventually push them to more and more people in the coming months.

“A small percentage of people will begin to see ads in their Messenger Home tab towards the end of this month as we build ads inventory, and then learn from this beta expansion to ensure we’re continuing to deliver the best experience. We will gradually look to extend this to more people over the coming months, said Facebook on their post.”

Just like ads in Facebook, the entries you’ll see are specifically targeted to you meaning they will bring businesses relevant to your interests (maybe something you’ve searched in Facebook or online). As an advertiser, you will be able to purchase an ad space in Messenger if you wish to do so.

Below are the beta features so far:

  • Messenger ads – found in the home tab of Messenger. When people tap on an ad, they will be sent to the destination chosen during ads creation. This can be your website or a Messenger conversation.
  • Click to Messenger ads – takes full advantage of the personalized nature of messaging by driving people to a conversation after they interact with the ad in Facebook, Instagram or Messenger.
  • Sponsored messages – allows businesses to re-engage with people who have started a conversation with them.
