Huawei is developing its own mapping service

Huawei has confirmed that they are developing their own mapping service called Map Kit.

According to a report by China Daily, Huawei’s Map Kit is seemingly being worked on as a challenge to Google Maps. Huawei has stated that the Map Kit is not directly for consumer use but rather is “designed to encourage software developers to come up with applications based on its mapping capabilities.” Booking Holdings, a US travel aggregator website, is one of many companies that have partnered with Huawei to develop the mapping service.

Zhang Pingan, a president of cloud services at Huawei’s consumer business group, stated that the Map Kit will offer “real-time traffic conditions and a highly sophisticated navigation system which can recognize a car changing lanes. It will also support augmented reality.

The company has stated that it is planning to unveil the Map Kit by October.
