5G smartphones are becoming more and more affordable, and we already have a number of them are priced under PHP 16K. That number will still grow as we expect more models to be launched under that range, like the Nokia G50 5G powered by the Snapdragon 480. There’s another smartphone in the market, though, that packs the same chipset, the OPPO A74 5G. Which one looks better on paper? Find out below.

The only advantage we see on the Nokia in this department is the size. It has a larger 6.82-inch screen compared to the OPPO’s 6.5-inch. However, that’s a 0.32-inch difference and not that obvious.
What users will notice, though, is the resolution. The OPPO has an FHD+ with 405ppi, compared to the Nokia’s HD+ with 252ppi. The former also has a 90Hz refresh rate for smoother visuals and a responsive 180Hz touch sampling rate.
Both devices are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 5G SoC with Adreno 619 GPU and 6GB of RAM. They also have 128GB storage, but the OPPO has disclosed that it uses UFS 2.1. We’ll consider it as an advantage as Nokia hasn’t revealed its storage type.
The two devices also support microSD cards. However, both models didn’t specify if it uses a dedicated slot or a hybrid slot.
The two devices are versatile shooters equipped with multiple cameras and 48MP main sensors. However, the OPPO phone has a higher ultra-wide camera resolution and a dedicated 2MP macro, which the Nokia lacks.
In terms of selfies, OPPO wins in resolution with a 16MP shooter versus the 8MP on the Nokia.
Do note, though, that we’re just talking about pixels. Camera quality is a different discussion, which can be discussed once both units are in for review.
Both smartphones boast Dual-SIM with 5G connectivity. The Nokia has WiFi 6 versus WiFi 5 on the OPPO, but the OPPO has Bluetooth 5.1 versus 5.0 on the Nokia. Both have NFC, GPS, USB-C, 3.5mm headphone jack, and side-mounted fingerprint scanners.
When it comes to software, both are running on Android 11. OPPO uses its custom UI called ColorOS 11, while Nokia uses pure Android, allowing the company to provide three years of monthly security updates and two years of OS upgrades.
For the battery, we have the same 5,000mAh capacity with 18W fast charging on both. We can determine which one has the longest battery life once we have both units for review.
Which one to get?
The OPPO A74 5G appears to offer more, especially in the display department, based on the advantages. However, it’s also priced higher at PHP 15,999USD 273INR 23,112EUR 260CNY 1,985. The Nokia G50 5G, on the other hand, is priced lower at PHP 13,990USD 238INR 20,210EUR 227CNY 1,736, a PHP 2,009USD 34INR 2,902EUR 33CNY 249 difference. So, which one should you get?
If you value a higher screen resolution with a smooth 90Hz refresh rate and better ultra-wide camera resolution, you should go with the OPPO A74 5G. But if you’re on a budget with support for WiFi 6 and want something that will get software updates for three years and will get Android 13 in the future, the Nokia G50 5G is the one for you.

Nokia should have a field day, since it runs on stock android, with guaranteed updates for years. But other than that, Oppo wins in most categories, especially the camera department. Plus the nokia has that ugly water drop notch still.
