Amazon recently announced the retirement of Alexa by May 1, 2022. But it is not the virtual assistant launched in 2013. Web ranking service Alexa.com, also known as Alexa Internet, is the one Amazon will be ending operations with. Founded in 1996 and acquired by Amazon three years later, Alexa long ran as one of the top databases for the world’s most popular websites.
The announcement read as follows, “Twenty-five years ago, we founded Alexa Internet. After two decades of helping you find, reach, and convert your digital audience, we’ve made the difficult decision to retire Alexa.com on May 1, 2022. Thank you for making us your go-to resource for content research, competitive analysis, keyword research, and so much more.”
Amazon also declared a halt in accepting new subscriptions to Alexa’s services as of December 8, 2021. It cited its current customers would continue to enjoy access to Alexa until May. Back in 2009, Amazon already reduced Alexa’s functions by closing down its web search feature.
For those concerned with their online metrics and web analytics, alternative services like Alexa are still around. Among them would be SimilarWeb, SemRush, Tranco, and ComScore.
