Apple previously extended its deal with Qualcomm to use the company’s Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF systems for the iPhone until 2026. However, in a new development, the Cupertino giant will reportedly continue using Qualcomm’s 5G modems for an additional year.

Qualcomm Apple Fi

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon confirmed the news during the company’s first Q1 2024 fiscal quarter report. Amon specifies that Qualcomm will continue to license its 5G modems to Apple until at least March 2027.

Despite acquiring Intel’s modem division in 2019, Apple has yet to launch its own in-house 5G modem chip. Industry sources suggest that prototypes haven’t met Apple’s performance expectations. reportedly leaving them at least three years behind Qualcomm in this technology.

The iPhone 15 lineup currently relies on Qualcomm’s 5G modem technology. Notably, Qualcomm also supplies the satellite communication module featured in the iPhone 14 and 15 series.

With two renewals of the agreement, it seems that Apple won’t have an in-house modem ready until the iPhone 19.
