The Philippines may soon have its own National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA as a bill was filed to Philippine legislators.

Filipino astrophysicist Dr. Rogel Mari Sese announced the filing of two bills in the Senate and Lower House this week. The bills are House Bill 3637 and Senate Bill 1211 which aim to establish the Philippine Space Development and Utilization Policy and create a Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA).

The PhilSA, if created, would provide the country’s space technology-related needs like telecommunications and weather imaging. It’ll also be the Philippine representative for international space agreements and arbitrations. Accompanying the agency is the country’s own space policy ensuring national security and development aid.

It’s still too early to conclude about the passage of the bill but according to Sese, lawmakers were positive about the bill.
