Google cancels physical Google I/O 2020 event

Google has announced that it has decided to cancel the physical Google I/O 2020 event due to concerns around the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Google said that it decided the cancellation of the event in accordance with health guidance from the CDC, WHO, and other health authorities.

The event was slated to run between May 12 to 14 at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, where Google is expected to announce new technologies including the latest tools for developers.

Google also said in a statement that guests who have purchased tickets to I/O 2020 will receive a full refund by March 13, 2020. Guests who have registered for I/O 2020 will not need to enter next year’s drawing and will be automatically granted the option of purchasing an I/O 2021 ticket.

Although canceled, the company said that it will “explore other ways to evolve Google I/O to best connect with our developer community,” so it’s likely that Google will just go for a livestream event.
