Listen to article

HMD announced at Mobile World Congress 2026 that it plans to bring modern smartphone-like features to its upcoming feature phone lineup.

The company said the initiative is aimed at expanding digital access to users who rely on basic mobile phones, particularly in regions with limited connectivity or lower smartphone adoption.

Among the planned additions is a built-in digital wallet that will allow users to receive, store, and withdraw funds through local payment systems. The wallet will launch first in India during the first half of 2026 before expanding to other markets. HMD said the feature includes device-level security with PIN protection and is being developed with fintech firm Kivi3 and blockchain developer Polygon Labs.

HMD is also introducing an AI assistant designed specifically for feature phones. Developed with Sarvam AI, the assistant will support voice-based tasks such as making calls, setting alarms, and turning on the phone’s flashlight. It will also provide basic AI chat capabilities for simple questions.

In addition, the company is working on an AI companion service for elderly users. Developed with InTouch, the feature aims to provide conversational interaction and assistance tailored for older users. Pilot testing is expected to begin in Europe before a broader rollout.

HMD also plans to add video calling and enhanced messaging to its feature phones through a new Xpress Chat app. The service will support front-camera video calls, voice messages, group chats, and photo sharing.

The upcoming devices are expected to retain the traditional feature phone design, including physical keypads, long battery life, and simplified interfaces, while adding selected smart features typically found on smartphones.

HMD said these additions are part of its strategy to modernize feature phones and bring essential digital services to underserved markets worldwide.
