Qualcomm has just announced its latest Quick Charge 5 standard, capable of supporting more than 100W of charging power in a smartphone.
Â
Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 5 claims to charge a 4,500mAh battery from 0 to 50% in just 5 minutes.
Qualcomm claims the new charging standard is 70% more efficient, offering up to four times faster charging speeds, while also keeping the temperature that’s 10 degrees Celsius cooler compared to its predecessor.
Operating at higher watts, Quick Charge 5 incorporates several safety features, including 12 separate voltage, current, and temperature protections, USB-input overvoltage protection at 25V, and external power controls beyond 30V. It has several new features for safety, power transfer efficiency, and to help extend the battery life cycle of the device, including:
For optimal performance, Qualcomm is also introducing its latest power management ICs (PMIC), the Qualcomm SMB1396 and Qualcomm SMB1398. These ICs support 1SnP and 2SnP batteries, wired and wireless inputs, an adaptive operation based on the power source, and scalability. These ICs are also able to provide maximum efficiency above 98%.
Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 5 will be available in commercial devices in Q3 2020 and is supported on Snapdragon 865, 865 Plus, and future premium and high tier mobile platforms. Xiaomi is expected to be the first manufacturer to adopt the latest charging standard.
