Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon 850 mobile PC platform

Qualcomm is now fully diving into creating chipsets for mobile PCs as they unveil the Snapdragon 850 in Computex 2018. This is their first attempt at creating a chipset specifically designed for mobile PCs.

This isn’t the first chipset to land on mobile PCs though, as we already saw a few laptops and convertibles use the Snapdragon 835 last year. Sadly, the performance of the said chipset is quite lacking when it comes to providing power for these larger devices. Hence, the birth of the Snapdragon 850.

Qualcomm is hoping that the Snapdragon 850 will usher in a new era of Always On, Always Connected mobile PCs. This is thanks to battery efficiency and performance of the chipset and the Snapdragon X20 LTE modem, which will help in keeping devices Always Connected.

The new chipset is based on the current Snapdragon 845 mobile platform flagship. Only this time, it’s 10nm Kryo 385 cores can sustain higher clocks speeds at 2.96GHz max. The performance is about 30% faster than the previous generation 835. As for the rest of the specs, we have an Adreno 630 GPU, Qualcomm Spectra 280 image processor, Bluetooth 5.0, and support for Quick Charge 4+.

According to Qualcomm, devices with the Snapdragon 850 will be shipped around the holiday season.
