Smart to roll out Php1-per-minute calls to all networks

Smart Communications is planning to roll out Smart Express Call 50 which would offer calling to any network for as low as Php1 per minute.

The Smart Express Call 50 will provide its subscribers with 50 minutes of all-net calls which are valid for 30 days. This brings down the cost of calling family and friends on any network to only Php1 per minute. These services will be an add-on to other Smart Prepaid offers and to Smart Postpaid subscribers on top of their existing plans.

Additionally, TNT and Sun shall also roll out similar offers, allowing users to conveniently boost their existing TNT and Sun promos with 5 minutes of all-net calls for only Php5.

It’s still undisclosed when the roll out will begin so stay tuned for more updates.

This low price seems aimed at discouraging the 3rd telco player from coming in. The days of exaggerated profits in the telco business seem to be over. What a 3rd player can provide is better quality if it has the means to invest the billions necessary for a great network. Then again Filipinos might be so price conscious that they’ll choose the cheapest provider even if they have the lousiest service.
