YouTube has announced new updates aimed at making the platform safer and more balanced for teen viewers, while giving parents better control. The changes focus on screen time management, content quality, and easier account supervision.

One of the biggest updates is for YouTube Shorts. Parents can now set scroll limits for how long teens can watch short-form videos, from 0 to 2 hours. There is also a “zero” option, which lets parents completely turn off Shorts during certain times, such as school hours. In addition, supervised accounts can now use custom “Bedtime” and “Take a Break” reminders.
YouTube is also rolling out new content quality guidelines for teens. These were created with experts from UCLA, the American Psychological Association, and other youth-focused groups. The goal is to promote educational and meaningful videos, while reducing low-quality content in recommendations.
Finally, YouTube is simplifying family account management. Parents will soon find it easier to create child accounts and switch between profiles in the mobile app, helping ensure the right settings apply to the right viewer.
