We saw the prototype unit of Sony’s Mobile Entertainment Player last night and it looks like the Xperia Arc, minus the curves. It’s Sony’s equivalent of the Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 5.0, just a bot smaller.
This Android 2.3 gingerbread device does not have any SMS or voice functions but can go online over WiFi. The 4.3-inch display is closer to the size of the Xperia handsets rather than of the Tablet S.
Sony is positioning this device as a multimedia player and a portable gaming device so they packed it with a Tegra 2 processor.
For HD video playback, there’s a micro-HDMI port so you can connect it t an external display or HDTV. Sony did not give any specifics on the release date or pricing of the unit but promises it will be out by first quarter of next year.

too little too late Sony (unless excellent pair of earphones are included). but really it is just too late sony

I used to have a sony walkman in the 90’s and the sony discman later but with the advent of the ipod, everything changed for the better for me and for my portable music player. Sony should have challenged apple that early, but now I think its very late for them.

Hopefully priced lower than Galaxy Wifi 5.0

It will be a battle for the price point, as usual. Keep up the good work, Sony, and please, will you make.believe your products. That’s what you are paying your R&D Department, innovate or die!

Nice alternative to the iPod Touch, if the price is right. Meron ba s’yang camera? Parang may flash sa likod, most likely may Camera ‘to, and I hope it takes HQ video & High Res Photos (unlike the iPod Touch’s gorgeous VGA res photos).

For those who actually buy portable music players for music playback, then sony will probably deliver in terms of sound quality. The walkman line has always used better sound cards than those on the ipods, and have always produced a much better sound.
The difference is that it’s no longer just about sound these days, and that’s why the sony walkman has been left in the dust because of the ipod and other android portable devices.:)
Plus the price will probably be extremely high. It’s sony we’re talking about here.
erickkk says:
Hopefully, it’ll still sport their legendary sound signature. I still prefer their sound signature over Cowon’s and Archos PMPs. (don’t even mention apple’s they’re total crap)
carlsant says:
I agree, too late for Sony if they want to match Apple’s I touch. However, how knows this might click only if the price is right hehehe… This will be a good alternative if someone is looking for a cheaper music player. Hope you can also post a hands-on video of this gadget :), we will be waiting for it kuya Yuga :)
techihunt says:
This or even the Samsung edition will do as long as the Android marketplace is available.
