Currently, photos produced by cameras and smartphones come with an EXIF metadata tag that includes camera settings, date and time, location, image metrics, and copyright information. However, this metadata can be easily altered right from the camera settings itself or a direct manipulation of the output file. As such, camera manufacturers Nikon, Sony Group, and Canon are developing a new technology that will embed digital signatures on the images they produce. A web-based tool called Verify was also developed in collaboration with numerous camera makers, tech manufacturers, and global news organization to display the embedded information from photos to validate its authenticity.
