The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) allots PHP 7.7 billion for the implementation of its Free Wi-Fi for All project on its proposed 2021 budget. Apparently, the DICT has already started rolling out the fiber network for their EDSA Free WiFi project (Just noticed this last night as I was driving along EDSA). An engineering crew has been seen installing cables along EDSA with signages that indicate EDSA Free WiFi (DICT). This project could be part of the DICT's mandate to provide Free WiFi Service in Public Places which has earmarked Php1.8 billion for 2017. Through its Region 12 office, the DICT deployed Starlink kits, charging stations, and free internet services under the Government Emergency Communications System (GECS) and Free Public Internet Access Program (FPIAP). Free WiFi is now available in key locations, including evacuation centers, disaster response offices, and municipal facilities. Meanwhile, PLDT and Smart supplied connectivity support, free WiFi, charging stations, and free calls to assist responders and affected residents.
